Contesting the eighth season of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, Chevrolet RML‘s #1 Cruze 1.6T WTCC was driven by then double WTCC champion Yvan Muller. The 1.6-liter turbocharged racer replaced the 2.0-liter Cruze LT WTCC used during the previous season, following a major update to the Super 2000 Regulations for 2011.
Muller, who had already won the WTCC Drivers Championship with SEAT in 2008 and Chevrolet in 2010, started the season looking to equal Andy Priaulx’ record of three victories. Having never finished outside the top four since his first WTCC season in 2006, few doubted that he’d go close.
Despite trailing teammate Robert Huff going into the halfway point of the season, with only two wins to his name, a consistent second half to the campaign yielded six further victories and saw the Frenchman pick up his record-equaling third championship win. Those wins played a significant role in Chevrolet retaining the Manufacturers’ Championship it had won for the first time in 2010.
