Contesting the eighth season of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler's #12 BMW 320 TC was driven by Franz Engstler himself. The 320 TC, introduced by BMW Motorsport at the start of the 2011 campaign following a major update to the Super 2000 Regulations, replaced the 320si used by the team during the previous year.
Touring car veteran Engstler began competing in the WTCC in 2007, two years after his team had made its debut in the competition. He had only ever managed to garner single-figure point totals in previous years but at the wheel of the new BMW he enjoyed his most rewarding season to date.
Consistency in the first half of the campaign, including six top-ten finishes, was followed by a spectacular second half topped off with a win in his home event in Germany and third place in the Race of UK—the first podium finishes of his WTCC career. Overall Engstler ended up in eighth position with 88 points while helping BMW clinch second place in the Manufacturers' Championship, behind Chevrolet.
